The brand started in 1997 with its first store in Eikestad Mall, located in the student town of Stellenbosch. In its early years, Hungry Lion operated as part of Shoprite Holdings, and many stores were connected to Shoprite supermarkets.
In 2014, the company introduced a major rebrand and began opening independent restaurant locations. By 2018, Hungry Lion became a fully independent fast-food business.
